Machu Picchu Travel

Machu Picchu, the Old Mountain, according to its meaning in Quechua, is an ancient Andean town  that is believed to be built in the middle of the 15th century and that would be the most important religious, ceremonial and residential center of the Inca empire, specifically Pachacutec. It is considered a masterpiece of architecture and engineering due to the complexity and spectacularity of its construction in a place so difficult to build. In addition, its spectacular landscape situation has turned it into a mysterious place, the main subject of much literature and much research from a scientific, esoteric and religious point of view. Currently, since 1983, it is a Unesco World Heritage Site and one of the seven wonders of the modern world since 2007. This historical and architectural ensemble is important for historical information, worth the redundancy, which has contributed to many scientists, as well like the mystery that surrounds everything related to himself. The rediscovery of its ruins in 1902, meant an intense work in which many archaeological pieces were obtained and, above all, the Inca culture was deeply known. Thanks to the state of preservation , much information was obtained about the social division of this town, uses and customs, religious beliefs and, as an important point, which is currently being studied, the importance of astronomy for this town.

The importance of Machu Picchu is that it was built in an area where earthquakes and copious rains are important and, nevertheless, the buildings were built precisely to withstand not only earthquakes, but also a drainage system very studied, avoid all types of flooding and the impovement of rainwater. In addition, the constructions took into account astronomical criteria, as well as rituals. It has even been discovered that the alignment of some buildings coincides with the solar solstices and with points of dawn and sundown at certain times of the year.

History of the old Mountain, Wonder of the world - Machupicchu:

The Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu mountains are part of the orographic formation known as Batolito in Vilcabamba which is located on the left of the Urubamba Canyon, which was known as the Picchu Ravine or "Quebrada de Picchu" in spanish. The story tells that in the Picchu ravine lived populations coming from Vilcabamba and Sacred Valley regions. Now we will tell you the magical story of this world wonder.

Machu Picchu during the Inca period (1438-1534)

In 1440 when Picchu was conquered by Pachacuteq the first Inca emperor,he decided in 1450 to build an urban complex with civil and religious buildings of great luxury as a refuge for the most select of the Inca aristocracy, a luxurious and well-kept mausoleum to receive the remains of the Pachacutec monarch. Nevertheless, some of its best constructions and the evident ceremonial character would demonstrate that this one was used like religious sanctuary. The fortress was located on the eastern slope of the Vilcanota mountain range, a visit to the heart of the Inca Empire and the Andean and colonial culture. With the magnificent "Lost City of the Incas", Machu Picchu about 80 km from Cusco, the capital of Tahuantinsuyo. Its strategic geographical situation was chosen with admirable success. Surrounded by deep cliffs and far from the sight of strangers by a tangled jungle, the citadel of Machu Picchu possessed the quality of having a single and narrow entrance, which allowed, in case of a surprise attack, be defended by very few warriors.Within the valleys that formed the region of the valley are the administrative centers of Patallacta and Quentemarca which favored Machu Picchu for its agricultural sectors and thus provided food to the population. When Pachacuteq died, all his properties happened to be administered by his panaca and a new government of the Inca began Túpac Yupanqui (1470-1493) and Huayna Capac (1493-1529).

History of Machu Picchu since 1915:

Between 1924 and 1928 Martin Chambi and Juan Manuel Figueroa made a series of photographs in Machu Picchu which were published in different Peruvian magazines expressing great local interest in the ruins, turning them into a national symbol.

  • In 1981 Machu Picchu is established within the Protection Zones.
  • In 1983 Machu Picchu is part of the World Heritage List.
  • In 2007 Machu Picchu becomes part of the New 7 Wonders of the Modern World; where the Government declares every July 7 Day of the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu.
