El Calafate

El Calafate is a Young town funded in 1927, located at the southern shores of Lago Argentino. Its name is derived from a little bush with yellow flowers and dark blue berries that is very common in Patagonia.

Los Glaciares National Park, was declared a Natural World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The gem of this national park, Perito Moreno Glacier is sliding down from atop the southern continental ice field, Moreno’s 70-m wall of ice sporadically chokes off the narrow Canal de Los Tempanos, creating a natural ice dam, which eventually explodes in a dynamic display of force every 3/4 years depending on the weather. In the last 7 years, a private company opened a small ski center nearby the town, so in winter season it is open for all those who like to ski and enjoy the amassing scenery from the top of a mountain.

Surrounding the town and near the lake, you can find few “Estancias” where you can stay and get to know the hard life in those places, sleeping at typical and worm houses, eating great “Asados” and sharing fabulous moments.
