IMPORTANCE OF MACHU PICCHU:

FOR AGRICULTURE:
  • HIGHER AGRICULTURAL AREA .- It is the one found on the current access road, from the middle to the top, composed of a series of agricultural terraces. In the upper part is what most call as "The Cemetery" which was actually an agricultural ceremonial sector, which is strewn with an infinity of stones. In this square there is a construction called "The Superior Guardians", which is nothing more than a construction of a Wayrana or Masma type (an Inca construction with three walls). Then, almost halfway through the plaza there is a carved rock called "La Roca Funeraria", which is given different functions related to funerary rites, but in reality it was a ceremonial altar of an agricultural nature. In the background you can see several buildings called "Qolqas" or large deposits. This is followed by a series of agricultural terraces usually called platforms, but a large number of them are found with a lot of vegetation.
  • LOWER AGRICULTURAL AREA.- Located in the lower part of what is the current access road to the citadel. In this sector are "The Lower Guardians", places that were actually the homes of farmers. It is also worth mentioning that here agricultural terraces are covered by vegetation. The earth found in these terraces is vegetable humus that was brought from another place and placed in these terraces.

FOR THE RELIGIOUS SECTOR:

Composed of four constructions and some special lithics. It is a group of buildings clearly related to religious functions. This set is broken down as follows:

  • The Main Temple This sector is better known as the "Temple of the Sun". It should be clarified that in Inca times the sun was not the most important deity, its conception is more linked to the concept of light. This construction is of isodome blocks of an amazing elaboration and insertion. The characteristic is that they are stone blocks that as observed, those in the lower part are semi-megalithic in character and those in the upper parts are of small dimensions. The building has several trapezoidal niches arranged in 5-7-5 (5 in each side parameter and 7 in the center). Apart from this, in the lower part of the frontal parameter three lithics of considerable dimensions. This block is the ceremonial area of the temple and the two small blocks are secondary elements or accessory tables of the main altar for the placement of objects that were used for the paraphernalia of the rites performed in this place.
  • The Temple of the Three Windows Construction Masma or Wayrana type of three walls, although this has a small difference in the front, where there is no wall but a lytic pillar to support the low beam of the roof. The physical element of the presence of the three windows is directly related to the symbolic-ideological trilogy of the religion of the Andean world, such as:Centella - Lightning - Thunder / Sol - Luna - Stars / Puma - Serpent - Condor. That is to say, an element clearly of ritual symbolic architecture. In addition to the three windows, this place has two trapezoidal blind niches, which leads us to another idea that would be much more linked to the ideological relationship of memories of the origins. It is therefore this construction linked to the symbolism of the three lands (pachas) or union of worlds within the Andean ideology. All this for the reason of the existence of the lithic that has the sculpted stepped sign.
  • The House of the Priest ; a construction of ritual and utilitarian character, that is, as a deposit of paraphernalic objects.
  • The stone of the rites or rock of the ceremonies; this is a large block located at the angle of access to the plaza of the temples. It is indicated that this great block was a ritual altar, a sacred rock, in which certain religious rites related to the sector were carried out, such as offerings, sacrifices, etc.
  • The priests' room or Temple of the Stars; Construction that is in the back part of the main temple. Its walls are made of rectangular stones of ashlar or rectangular isodome type. It has 13 trapezoidal niches and a monolithic with 24 angles. For these characteristics and also for the type of construction and the location of it, this was related to ceremonial rites, although we can not specify for what rites was dedicated.

USEFUL INFORMATION:

How far in advance should I book the program?

We receive reservations at least 1 week in advance. However, the quotas are limited and are always subject to availability. Both the entrances to the Machu Picchu citadel and the entrances to the optional Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu mountains are in high demand, in some cases being depleted months in advance. For this reason, we recommend making the reservation as early as possible.

What is the difference between Machu Picchu citadel, Machu Picchu mountain and Huayna Picchu mountain?

What is popularly known as "Machu Picchu" corresponds to the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu, which is composed of different areas, including the citadel Machu Picchu (the archaeological center or ruins) and its two surrounding mountains: Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu . The tour includes the entrance to the citadel, but not the entrance to climb any of the two mountains, which you can add optionally to your reservation.

How long is the visit to Machu Picchu?

The tour includes the entrance to Machu Picchu for the first shift (6:00 a.m - 10:00 a.m). This schedule will be divided as follows: one and half hour for a guided tour of the citadel, three hours to go up and down one of the optional mountains. In case you are not going to climb any of the optional mountains, you will have more time to explore the citadel.

How about the weather in Machu Picchu?

Machu Picchu is located between the "Cordillera de los Andes" for its name in spanish and the Amazon rainforest, having a warm and temperate climate, with an average minimum temperature of 12 ° C and an average maximum temperature of 24 ° C. From April to October is the dry season in the place, during that period there is a lower probability of rain, while from November to March is the rainy season, during that period there is a greater chance of rain. Despite the previous differentiation, during all the days of the year there is possibility of rains, since it is a subtropical zone.
